ADDICTIONS: ULTIMA ONLINE
On 7/31/2000 I entered a realm. A fantasy world. The world was filled with monsters, hero's, villains & harlots. The would was called Britannia and was hosted in the world called Ultima Online. My journey started out as a character named PshawNoah. I tagged along and learned from my friends Patrick (as Patrick - sometimes Pan) and Steve (as Gellor). We honed our fighting skills, learned the economy, the social interactions and many, many facets of "the game". We all learned it the hard way. We started it with no guidance and we spent many, many hours playing until our eyes got tired. We made the cash and created "THE CHUM GUILD (TCG)".
Damn. It was so much fun. Though, about a year ago, the attraction faded. The KEY 3 CHUMS had developed into quite different players. We all had our ambitions and many of times we got together and had outings. Though, our early fanaticism faded, at least for me it did. I had no interest in massing large amounts of gold, wealth, riches, rare items, and new skills.
PshawNoah had a taste for blood. It could only quenched by creating new characters. PshawNoah was a good soul. He often guided the newer players of the game in a role as a Companion. I created Jack Officer to be everything that PshawNoah was not. Jack was my fighter. I tried hard as Jack ... but really never got too swift. Jack spent more time dead than alive it seemed like. PshawNoah was his main financier. PshawNoah could make money... Jack was brutish and broke.
The next thought was to leave the "shard" I was on with The Chum Guild. I went to the advanced players group on Siege Perilous. Well, that name pretty sums up my existence. I created CHIMATA-NO-KAMI ... He was a Japanese traveler & part time ladies man, but my prowess in both consistently failed me & again, more time spent dead than alive.
So, today was my last day. Getting charged $10/month and not playing was foolish. I have the memories, but the need for blood and pixel friends are a thing of the past. I logged into "the game" before I quit. I gave away my remaining possessions to whoever wandered by. I walked around Britan one last time. I made an illegal use of my companion powers and teleported to Haven. Haven is the town I started in and figured it should be the place where I leave the game. In hindsight, I should of called The Chums. I should of made it a bigger production ... but, I felt it more fitting to quietly leave than to make too much of a splash. So, I tipped my cap, and told the few people standing around, "have fun!"
I immediately logged out and canceled my account.
